United for Peace and Justice also plans events around the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war -- a bunch of them, in fact, all over the damn country. Bay Area readers may like the March 19 noon event in front of Nancy Pelosi's office, featuring former Green Party gubernatorial candidate (and 2004 Ralph Nader running mate) Peter Camejo, as well as Justin Raimondo of AntiWar.com.
MoveOn notes that a second aircraft carrier has now arrived in the Persian Gulf (I'd assumed it was already there, which was wrong), and thus has prepared a petition asking that Congress require Mr. Bush to seek their authorization before taking military action against Iran. Even Mrs. Clinton has recently said Mr. Bush better come to Congress first before he goes a-bombing, and I doubt there's very much enthusiasm on the Republican side, either -- unless Mr. Bush can fake a convincing "Persian Gulf incident." Though if he could do that, why couldn't he fake a convincing WMD program in Iraq?
Senators Boxer and Sanders have introduced S. 309, the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act of 2007, which would require America to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. Got that? The bill reminds us (in evoking the necessity of reducing emissions below past levels) that Mr. Bush has long proposed reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in relation to the size of the American economy -- which, under ideal conditions, is always growing. As David Corn once pointed out, this would be excellent policy if the planet were also growing at the same rate as the American economy. I think we can do a whole hell of a lot better than that, but signaling your support for this bill couldn't hurt.
